Choosing a Paris Visite Card

Why should I get a Paris Visite Card?

It is a very handy and affordable way to get around Paris as it allows you to travel on all public transport within your selected zones. Not only that but it also offers benefits with over a dozen partners when you show the card. These change so it is best to check the RATP (Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens - Autonomous Parisian Transportation Administration) website for regular updates.

How do I get a Paris Visite Card in South Africa?

It is very easy to order a Paris Visite Card from us - we don't need photo ID or your dates of travel! Email us at sales@britishtips.com and we will assist you.

The cards are actual cards and, therefore, cannot be emailed. You can send a courier/driver of your choice to collect it from us (Durbanville, Cape Town), or we can arrange a courier for you. We usually use Postnet-to-Postnet, which is affordable and efficient. Depending on where we are sending it, the rate can vary from around R150 to R250.

We will need your physical address and contact number if we are arranging a courier for you.

Is it the same as the Paris Pass?

No, the Paris Visite Card (sometimes called a pass) is only for public transport in Paris.

The Paris Pass®is a sightseeing pass that allows free or reduced-price entry to various attractions in Paris. The Paris Pass® does include a Paris Visite Card but they are two separate things.

Which zone should I get?

Zones 1-3 will get you to most of the popular tourist destinations in Paris. including the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Cite des Sciences/La Villette, Louvre, Latin Quarter, Luxembourg Gardens, Les Grands Magasins (Printemps and Galleries La Fayette).

Zones 1 – 5 (older tickets say 1 – 6) will allow you to travel throughout Île-de-France (Greater Paris region), including Disneyland® Paris, Fountainbleu, and Château de Versailles, as well as to/from the Roissy-Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Orly airports.

For how many days can I get a Paris Visite Cards?

How long is a day?

It is one calendar day and you can use it as much as you like within that day. Your Paris Visite Card counts from the day of first use (whether you activate it in the morning, afternoon, or evening) until midnight on the last day of validity.

For example, if you have a one-day card and you start using it at 8PM, it will be valid until 12PM on that day, not 8PM the following day. If you start using the card at 6AM, you will still have until 12PM on that day to use it.

Therefore, in order to get the most out of your card, it is best to start using it in the morning as this allows you to get the most out of it. If you need a late trip, we recommend purchasing a single journey in Paris, rather than wasting an entire day of your Paris Visite Card.

What are the Paris public transport times?

Metro: Starts at 05h30. Runs until 01h15 on weekdays, and 02h15 on Fridays, Saturdays, and Bank holidays.

RER: Daily 05h30 – 01h20.

Bus: Starts at around 05h30. At night, the Noctilien night bus network will take over from 00h30 – 05h30.

Roissybus (Paris Opéra to Roissy Charles-de-Gaulle airport): From 05h15 – 00h30. This journey takes 60 – 70 minutes and buses depart every 15 – 20 minutes.

Orlybus (Paris Denfert-Rochereau to Orly airport): From 05h30 to midnight. This journey takes 30 – 40 minutes and buses depart every 8 – 15 minutes.

Orlyval train (Anthony RER-B to Orly airport): From 06h00 to 23h35. This journey takes 8 - 10 minutes and trains depart every 5 – 7 minutes.

What does the card look like?

How do I use my Paris Visite Card?

Firstly, start by writing your first and last name on the pass, as well as starting and ending dates. The first time you use it, it will be activated.

The Paris Metro system is quite old and the ticket system can seem daunting. We recommend looking at the map carefully before you start your journey, and note down which changes you need to make and where so you don’t have to keep stopping to check the map.

You can download the RATP app to help you use the system and find your way around.

At the entrances and exits of stations, there are turnstiles. Enter to the left of the green arrow. You will need to put the ticket into the slot and go through.

Do NOT pull the ticket out until you are through the turnstile or the turnstile will lock and you will be stuck. Remember to remove your ticket as you go through it and keep it. You must carry that ticket with you at all times. If you don’t have it and the transport police stop you, you may be asked to leave the train or even be fined.

Important: If you’re travelling with luggage and there isn’t a special wider gate/turnstile, we recommend you push the luggage through AHEAD of you, THEN go through, and then take your ticket. If you pull the luggage behind you, the gate will close and your luggage will be stuck.

When you leave an RER station, you will need to put the card through a ticket machine turnstile again but this is not the case with Metro stations.

What if the card doesn’t work?

This does happen sometimes because of how easy it is to damage a cardboard ticket. From our experience, it is very easy to resolve this – just go to a ticket desk at the station and ask the staff member to check your ticket. If it does not work properly, they will replace it for you free of charge.

Remember to always greet staff with ‘Bonjour!’ first. In France, it is considered very rude to just go straight into asking for something without greeting first.
