Scotland’s capital is wonderful during winter and even better during the festive season. Whether you’re strolling through the historic streets, shopping at markets, marveling at the lights, sipping hot chocolate, or catching a festive show, the city transforms into the perfect destination for embracing the holiday spirit.
We recommend starting up at the castle for a view over the city, then taking a stroll down the Royal Mile. Pop into a traditional pub to warm up with a dram of whisky or a glass of heather ale, or head to one of the city’s cosy cafés for a festive hot chocolate. You may not see snow in Edinburgh over Christmas (although you could be lucky!), but it will be cold and rainy, so pack your winter warmers.

Here are our a few of our favourite things to do over the festive season in Edinburgh:
Festive lights
George Street and the Royal Mile are decked out with lights and decorations, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere. Some of the shops and restaurants go all out with gorgeous décor and should definitely be part of your festive stroll. Here are some great spots to brighten up your evening:
- Edinburgh Castle: From late November 2024 to early January 2025 on selected dates, Edinburgh Castle brings you the Castle of Light. Prebooking is essential.
- St Andrew Square: The trees on the square are colourfully illuminated, with the famous Melville Monument shining in blue. Look out for the façade of the boutique hotel, The Ivy, which always dazzles with festive displays.
- The Dome (George Street): With spectacular garlands wrapped around The Dome’s soaring pillars, this one’s a must see in the heart of the Georgian New Town. And it’s not just the façade – inside, a majestic Christmas tree dominates the hall along with a multitude of other decorations. Once a bank, it has become a popular restaurant and bar – book in advance if you’d like to have a meal here as it is super popular.
- The Witchery (Royal Mile): This boutique hotel and bar on St Boswell’s Close decorates beautifully for every season.
- Other places you’ll see lights include Victoria Street, Multrees Walk, Castle Hill and The Mound. Look out for the simple but beautiful tree outside St Giles Cathedral.
Botanical beauty
A visit to Edinburgh’s magnificent botanical gardens for Christmas at the Botanics should not be missed. The gardens are transformed after dark with incredible illuminations, from floating candles to dancing changing colours. There are also vendors where you can purchase festive treats to enjoy on your visit. Best of all, you’re also helping to support plant conservation work.
Running on selected evenings between 21 November to 30 December 2024 and pre-booking is essential. More info here.
Bustling markets and funfairs
Edinburgh’s Christmas 2024 (the collective term for the markets and funfairs throughout the city) runs from mid-November 2024 to early-January 2025. You’ll find the main markets along Princes street, although there will be smaller locations throughout Edinburg’s city centre. Whether you shop or just enjoy the atmosphere, consider adding them to your itinerary. From traditional-style markets and delicious eats and treats, to funfair rides and outdoor events, there’s something for everyone.
Here’s a quick guide to the main attractions:
- East Princes Street Gardens Christmas Market (17 November 2024 – 06 January 2025): This market with a unique view is packed with traditional-style stalls selling gifts and treats, and boasts views of Edinburgh Castle and the Scott Monument. Take a ride on the Big Wheel for unforgettable views of the city.
- West Princes Street Gardens Family Funfair (18 November 2024 – 06 January 2025): We love a good funfair and this one has rides and attractions aplenty. You won’t go hungry or thirsty either, with a plethora of food and drink stalls to choose from – including mulled wine. The Ross Bandstand offers a range of live events throughout.
- St Andrew Square Winter Garden (18 November 2024 – 01 January 2025): This one’s the place to go to get the warm and fuzzies! There’s a Kindness Tree (for donations), a Santa Letter Writing Station, Santa’s Stories, and even a Festive Cinema.
Be aware that these can become very crowded and there can be long queues.
Ice skating at George Street West and Castle Street
Take a spin around the ice at Edinburgh’s Christmas Ice Rink at George Street between 18 November 2024 and 06 January 2025. It’s undercover (although you’ll still be able to see and enjoy views of the skyline) so, even if it’s rainy outside, you can still enjoy yourself. Nearby, you’ll find the George Street “warming zone” where you can grab a warm drink or snack, or enjoy some traditional-style fairground rides like a carousel. Prepurchase of tickets is essential.
Take in a show
Edinburgh’s arts scene is well known, and the festive season is no exception. The Palace of Holyroodhouse hosts various Christmas-focused tours, and both St Giles Cathedral and Usher Hall put on several concerts throughout the season. Between 03 – 29 December 2024, you can see Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Edinburgh Playhouse. The traditional pantomime, Cinderella, will be performing at the Festival Theatre Edinburgh, Edinburgh South (outside city centre) from 23 November – 31 December 2024. From 29 November to 23 December 2024, families with young children will love THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride Edinburgh, an immersive theatrical experience at Edinburgh’s Waverley station.
Winter feasts and drinks
Although better known for haggis and whisky, Edinburgh actually has a thriving foodie scene, with loads of outstanding restaurants, bars and cafes. Many of Edinburgh’s restaurants offer special Christmas menus, but be sure to prebook your table. We recommend a whisky tasting at the Scottish Whisky Experience, where they also just so happen to have some pretty festive décor outside!
Head out of Edinburgh for a day tour
Want to see more of the country or need a break from the festive sparkle? Why not do a day tour to see more of this beautiful country? We have several excellent suppliers that run fantastic day tours during winter, so get in touch and we can advise you according to what you’d like to see.
Staying on through the New Year?
If you’re lucky enough to stay through to New Year, you’ll get to experience one of Edinburgh’s most famous celebrations: Hogmanay. The city’s New Year festivities are legendary, with street parties, concerts, and a spectacular fireworks display over Edinburgh. Many venues also have their own events – advance booking is essential. More info here.
Important:
Note that, although some are free, many of these festive options do have an entry fee and pre-booking is essential to avoid disappointment.
Be aware that many attractions do close on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, with many also having early closing on 24 December. Also remember that public transport schedules can be reduced around this time. Always check before you travel!
The above post is designed to inspire. All information is correct at time of writing, but it is always best to check before you travel to ensure there are no closures or changes.
